Payslip Template – Where’s The Best Place to Find?

November 3, 2011
Finding a high-quality, free payslip template isn’t always an easy task. When you do a google search, it’s hard to distinguish the good sites from the bad sites. Here’s a few quick tips and a quick video on improving the way you search on google.

Microsoft Template Libraries – A lot of the top search results you will find will be microsoft template libraries. On the plus side, most of these are free. On the negative side, there are an overwhelming number of templates to choose from and most of them look just awful. Also, if you don’t have the latest version of excel or word, you may be out of luck.

Docstoc – A number of websites will promise a free payslip template, but then just provide a link to a docstoc template. Last I checked, they wanted to charge around $10 for the template. That may be fine for some, but there are templates that are just as good for free, so why pay $10?

Specialty Websites: If you look hard enough, you find some personal websites with great, free payslip templates, like www.paysliptemplate.us. The nice thing is that they actually have a payslip template that you can download in just about any format, like microsoft excel, apple numbers, adobe PDF, and even Google Docs.

And finally, as promised, here are some tips and tricks on google search. Enjoy!

Becoming a Payslip Template Power User – Mastering Excel

October 27, 2011
Using Microsoft Excel to handle your payslip template has a lot of advantages, especially if you learn to master some of the advanced functionality within Excel. Using Excel, though, isn’t the easiest the program, and if you really want to take advantage of it, you’re going to need to spend a little time becoming familiar with what it is really capable of doing. Fortunately, there are a lot of resources that are available online for free.

To get started, just doing a google search for “top excel tips,” or if there is something specific you know you want to do, just search for that.

Some of my favorite tips and tricks came from this article. Like how to stamp the current time and date, how to shade alternate rows, and how to add a drop down menu list.

The Small Business Owner Dilemma: How Much Should You Pay Yourself?

October 26, 2011
If you are a small business owner filling out your own payslip template, one of the most difficult decisions you will have to make is how much to pay yourself. Ironically, more often than not, the tendency here is for owners to actually pay themselves too little, at least at first. How do you find the balance?

The first thing an entrepreneur wants to do is look at comparables. They should find out who they compare themselves to at other organizations. They may not have the money to pay themselves that [comparable salary], but they still need to know what that is.” – Lena Bottos, vice president of compensation at human resources management firm Kenexa.

Intuit & Bank of America Team Up – What This Means for Managing a Payslip Template

October 25, 2011
If you are already using a free payslip template, then you know that using a template has pros and cons. The pros are that it is free, easy to use and saves time. But on the other side, there is still a lot of work you have to do manually, like working with an accountant to understand tax liabilities and coordinating on the banked with your bank.

Today, Inuit (one of the leading provider of online payroll software) and Bank of America announced that they would be teaming up to better integrate their online services. For small businesses who bank through Bank of America, this could be big.

Here is what Ginny Lee, senior vice president and general manager of Intuit’s Employee Management Solutions division, had to say about the news:

“By teaming up with Bank of America, we’re taking the complexity out of payroll for their 4 million small business employers across the country. Whether small-business owners want to do it themselves or have us do it for them, we have a solution that best meets their needs.”

Location, Location, Location: The Relationship Between Where You Work and the Taxes You Pay

October 24, 2011
When it comes to working with a payslip template, one of the most important concepts to understand is location. Where you work will play a major role when it comes time to fill in the “taxes” section of the template. Depending on the tax structure of the city and state you live in, you may even decide that it makes more financial sense to move your companies headquarters in order to get a more favorable tax rate, as illustrated recently by the news that Twitter and Zynga were threatening to leave San Francisco in order to avoid certain payroll taxes. Here’s David Chiu explaining the relationship between taxes and business in this instance:

“Given these economic realities, there was simply no way for us to justify the cost burden of staying in San Francisco” – Ali Rowghani, Twitter’s chief financial officer

Ultimately, though, Twitter and Zynga were able to negotiate a special tax incentive for staying in the San Francisco area. In less your business has a lot of leverage, this probably isn’t something you could do. So it’s best to understand the tax implications of your locations before your business settles in.
